The granular finish given to the centre of a brass clock dial, or a type of finish for clock parts. The effect is produced by punching the matted centre dial all over with a single or multipointed punch, or by rolling the dial between rollers, one of which has fine spikes. A matted effect can also be obtained by etching with acid.
