Metaphorical extension links
One of a number of inheritance links between constructions posited in construction grammar (2). Involves a type of inheritance (2) in which some constructions are metaphorical extensions of other constructions. For instance, in the following utterance: John gave Mary a kiss, the independently motivated conceptual metaphor : a causal event is physical transfer motivates the extension of the ditransitive construction. That is, ditransitive syntax, which encodes successful physical transfer, is being employed to encode metaphorical transfer of a non-physical entity: a kiss. Thus this represents a metaphorical instance of the ditransitive construction and thus is linked to the ditransitive construction by a metaphorical extension link.
