Nolo contendere

A plea in a criminal case which is essentially the same as a guilty plea. The only difference is that a guilty plea may be used as evidence in a subsequent civil suit against the defendant, but a nolo plea may not be so used. A nolo plea counts as a first offence in second offence cases.
