Pulse hypothesis

A theory that begins with the assumption that all evolutionary changes are related to speciations and extinctions. If so, during a period of climate change the rates of speciation and extinction would be expected to accelerate, and therefore major climatic changes create a turnover pulse of rapid evolutionary change as whole new species groups replace older ones.
