Strain is a term used to describe the decreased frequency of a performance that occurs when the performance is reinforced on a large fixed ratio schedule. Under most conditions, strain occurs between long periods during which the performance does not occur at all and periods when there are bursts of the performance at high rates. The term abulia is also used as a synonym for strain.
