Transformational generative grammar
Theory of grammar proposed by the American linguist Noam Chomsky in 1957. Chomsky attempted to show how, with a system of internalised rules, native speakers of a language put their knowledge to use in forming grammatical sentences. He proposed a two-level structure for the sentence: the surface structure, which is the linguistic structure we see or hear, and the abstract deep structure of basic elements that is used for semantic analysis.
