Chromatin

The combination of DNA and the structural proteins (histones) it wraps around in the cell nucleus. Chromosomes are made out of chromatin.

Composed mostly of former rocks (like shale and sandstone) whose fragments have been carried a long distance from where they originated.

Metabolic processes that break down tissues and organs--turning protein into energy during a fast, for example. The opposite of Anabolic.

The chemical conversion of inorganic compounds found in an autotrophic organism's surroundings into food for it. Compare Photosynthesis.

Bitumen

Also known as asphalt or tar. Bitumen is a black, oily, viscous material that is a naturally produced from decomposed organic materials.
