Human genome

The human genome consists of 23 chromosome and the small mitochondrial DNA. 22 of the 23 chromosomes are autosomal chromosome pairs and the last one being a gender-determining pair. In total, the human genome contains the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA and approximately 20,000-25,000 genes. By understanding human genome, scientists are able to develop new medical applications that can significantly advance the state of health care.

Contributors in Human genome

Human genome

Arthrogryposis

Medical; Human genome

1) Persistent flexure or contracture of a joint. 2) Congenital fixation of a joint in an extended or flexed position. 3) Any of a group of congenital conditions characterised by reduced mobility ...

Arteriosclerosis

Medical; Human genome

A chronic disease characterised by abnormal thickening and hardening of the arterial walls with resulting loss of elasticity.

Amblyopia

Medical; Human genome

Dimness of sight especially in one eye without apparent change in the eye structures -- called also lazy eye, lazy-eye blindness.

Anion

Medical; Human genome

The ion in an electrolyzed solution that migrates to the anode; broadly: a negatively charged ion.

Base pair

Medical; Human genome

1) The two complementary, nitrogen-rich molecules held together by weak chemical bonds. Two strands of DNA are held together in the shape of a double helix by the bonds between their base pairs. ...

Band level

Medical; Human genome

The total number of bands estimated to be present in a haplotype set (23) of chromosomes. When cell division is arrested and staining is performed at an earlier stage of mitosis (prometaphase), ...

Birth defect

Medical; Human genome

1) A birth defect is an abnormality present at birth. Also called a congenital defect, it can be caused by a genetic mutation, an unfavourable environment during pregnancy, or a combination of both. ...
