Human genome

The human genome consists of 23 chromosome and the small mitochondrial DNA. 22 of the 23 chromosomes are autosomal chromosome pairs and the last one being a gender-determining pair. In total, the human genome contains the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA and approximately 20,000-25,000 genes. By understanding human genome, scientists are able to develop new medical applications that can significantly advance the state of health care.

Human genome

Arrhythmia

Medical; Human genome

Any variation from the normal rhythm or rate of the heart beat.

Arteriole

Medical; Human genome

Any of the small terminal twigs of an artery that ends in capillaries.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)

Medical; Human genome

1) A protein normally produced by a fetus. AFP levels are usually undetectable in the blood of healthy adult men or women (who are not pregnant). An elevated level of AFP suggests the presence of ...

Adenine

Medical; Human genome

1) Adenine (A) is one of four chemical bases in DNA, with the other three being cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). Within the DNA molecule, adenine bases located on one strand form chemical ...

Acute myelogenous leukaemia

Medical; Human genome

A quickly progressing disease in which too many immature blood-forming cells are found in the blood and bone marrow. Also called acute myeloid leukaemia or acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.

Acute lymphocytic leukaemia

Medical; Human genome

A quickly progressing disease in which too many immature white blood cells (called lymphoblasts) are found in the blood and bone marrow. Also called acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Adenocarcinoma

Medical; Human genome

1) Carcinoma derived from glandular tissue or in which tumour cells form recognisable glandular structures. 2) Cancer that begins in cells that line certain internal organs and that have glandular ...
