Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Plastic injection molding

Yellowness index

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A measure of the colour on the yellow scale.

Valve gating

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A type of gate where a pin is held in the gate or channel by spring tension. As the injection stroke moves forward, this gate compresses the plastic in the runner. When this pressure build-up is ...

Clarifiers

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Additive used in resins to improve transparency or translucency.

Restricted gate

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A very small orifice between runner and cavity in an injection mold. When the part is ejected, this gate readily breaks free of the runner system. Generally, the part drops through one chute and the ...

Nucleating agent

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Additive used in a polymer to increase crystallisation rate by providing additional sites for crystal growth (i.e. Talc). This results in faster cycle time.

Antistatic agent

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Additive used to improve the electrical conductivity of the plastic part so that any charge can readily go to ground and not remain in the part.

Toggle

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A type of clamping mechanism that exerts pressure by applying force on a knee joint. A toggle is used to close and exert pressure on a mould in a press.
