Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Contributors in Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding

Stack moulds

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Two or more moulds of a similar type that are positioned one behind the other to allow for additional parts to be manufactured during a cycle.

Ring gate

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Used on some cylindrical shapes. This gate encircles the core to permit the melt to first move around the core before filling the cavity.

Diaphragm gate

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Used in symmetrical cavity filling to reduce weld-line formations and improve filling rates.

Flow marks

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Wavy surface appearances on a moulded part caused by improper flow of the melt into the mold.

Plasticize

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

To render a material softer, more flexible and/or more moldable by the addition of a plasticizer.

Tensile modulus

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The ratio of nominal stress to the corresponding strain below the proportional limit of a material.

Modulus of elasticity

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The ratio of nominal stress to the corresponding strain below the proportional limit of a material.
