Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Contributors in Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding

Injection moulding pressure

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The pressure applied to the cross-sectional area of the moulding cylinder.

Extrusion

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The process of forming continuous shapes by forcing a molten plastic material through a die.

Clamping pressure

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

The pressure applied to the mould to keep it closed during the moulding cycle.

Weld line

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Where melted material flows together during moulding to form a visible line or lines on a finished part that may cause weakening or breaking of the component.

Knit lines

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Where melted material flows together to form a line or lines that may cause weakening or breaking of the component.

Delamination

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

When the surface of a finished part separates. Strata or fish-scale-type appearance may be visible where the layers may be separated.

Raised ejector site

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Where the ejector site is either heightened or raised above the surface of the component.
