Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Contributors in Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding

Ejector rod

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A bar that actuates the ejector assembly when the mould opens.

Crystallinity

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A state of molecular structure in some resins attributed to the existence of solid crystals with a definite geometric form, Such structures are characterised by uniformity and compactness.

Composite

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A structural non-homogenous material consisting of a combination of materials. Typically, one of the materials is a strengthening agent, the other being a thermoset or thermoplastic resin.

Tab gate

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A small removable tab about the same thickness as the moulded item, but usually perpendicular to the part for easy removal.

Plasticizer

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A substance or material incorporated in a material (usually a plastic or an elastomer) to increase its flexibility, workability or extensibility.

Black specks

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A specific kind of inclusion/contamination often associated with heat-degraded materials.

Draught

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A Slight taper in a mould wall designed to facilitate removal of the moulded object from the mold.
