Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Contributors in Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding

Vent

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A shallow channel or opening cut in the cavity to allow air or gases to escape as the melt fills the cavity.

Additive

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A substance compounded into a resin to enhance or improve certain characteristics.

Direct gate

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A sprue that feeds directly into the mould cavity.

Foaming agent

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Any substance which alone or in combination with other substances is capable of producing a cellular structure in a plastic mass.

Robot

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Automated devices for removing parts upon ejection from an open mould rather than letting the parts drop. Also see parts picker. Robots also can perform secondary functions, such as inspection, ...

Mold-temperature-control unit

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Auxiliary equipment used to control mould temperature. Some units can both heat and cool the mold. Others, called chillers, only cool the mold.

Virgin material

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

Any plastic compound or resin that has not been subjected to use or processing other than that required for its original manufacture.
