Antioch

An ancient city that was situated to the east of the Orontes River. It is near the modern city of Antakya, Turkey.

Antioch was founded between 300 and 400 BC and eventually competed with Alexandria as the chief city of the Near East. Although the city was once a great metropolis, it witnessed a lasting decline during the Middle Ages due to devastating earthquakes, battles, and changes in trade routes.

The only visible traces of Antioch today are fortification walls, aqueducts and the Church of St. Peter. The Church of St. Peter is said to have been a meeting place of an Early Christian community.
