Battle of Agnadello

The Battle of Agnadello, also Battle of Vaila, was the main battle in the War of the League of Cambrai. With this battle the Republic of Venice tried to stop the advance of Louis XII. of France, who wanted to conquer Venice's continental possessions. The outcome of the battle was a perfect French victory.

The League of Cambrai officially united Louis XII. of France, Maximilian I, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and Ferdinand the Catholic of Aragorn and took the official goal of overcoming the Venetians before planning a joint Turkish crusade, so that they could no longer benefit of the conflicts within the other Christian empires. The territorial objectives were directed to negate earlier Venetian vicotories.

The battle can be divided into three sections:

First began Louis XII his plan. by commanding his left flank arc on the left bank of the Adda circumvent the Venetians and was to advance up to the connecting line. When this was noticed by the Venetians, they withdrew their troops back under the protection of a large arquebusier rearguard.

First marched the French vanguard and the Venetian rearguard, unnoticed from each other, almost parallel in direction Agnadello. There espied the Venetians the opponent first and posted their units in the dry bed of a mountain creek, which was surrounded by a dam. At the same time guns were set up on the dam and reinforcements requested . First attacked the Swiss vanguard the Venetian rearguard, then tried another corps to attack over the vineyards, but both attacks were bloodily repelled by the Venetian' artillery. The area of vineyards and trees was ideal for the defender.

Ignoring the command, to retreat, and without the requested reinforcements, the Venetian commander persued now with his rear guard the French vanguard. favoured by the terrain, his action was successful in the beginning, however, as they reached level ground, the attackers were attacked by the French main body of Swiss and harnessed men. These could now defeat the Venetians in for them favourable terrain, thanks to their superior numbers.

The king's was thus intended maneuver, albeit belatedly, realized. The Venetian forces were even more outnumbered. The main group of Venetian forces withdrew to Verona, without offering further resistance to the opposing army.

After the battle, the mainland possessions of the Venetians were conquered by the French and Germans. However, the tide turned in late 1509 in favour of the Venetians, because Louis XII. and Maximilian divided and Julius II was preparing a change in alliance against France. The latter resulted in the Holy League from 1511.
