Beijing cough
Beijing cough is a respiratory illness that many expats and overseas visitors experience while staying in Beijing or other Chinese cities. Symptoms often include itchy throat and persistent dry cough. The problem usually goes away naturally once the person returns to his or her home country.
There is no formal medical definition for Beijing cough, but the symptom is widely believed to be related to heavy pollution levels in Beijing. Beijing cough is more severe during the winter months as local residents in and around the city burn coal to get heat. In January 2013, Beijing cough was formally included in a number of international travel guides for the city due to exceptionally high pollution levels.
