The Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response sometimes seen in hostages who exhibit empathy and loyalty towards their captors, sometimes to the point of defending them, in spite of the danger in which the hostages have been placed. These feelings are generally considered irrational because the hostages essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness.
