U. S. Cold War foreign policy toward the Soviet Union, first articulated by George Kennan in 1947 with his famous "X" article in Foreign Affairs. As originally articulated, the policy called for a vigilant but patient reaction to Soviet expansionism, emphasising political and economic tools over military force.
