A clinical situation in which a patient has extremely high blood pressure values, typically greater than 180/120 mm Hg that is also accompanied by the presence of acute and/or progressing target-organ damage. Immediate but gradual reduction in blood pressure using intravenous antihypertensive agents is needed to prevent acute morbidity and/or mortality.
