A proposal for the mechanism of cancer, based the fact that mutations are relatively much more common in cancer cells than in normal cells, and even increase as a tumour grows. An initial mutation, which creates the "mutator phenotype", allows the accumulation of further mutations and the evasion of the normal cheques on the cells' growth.
