Genus of about 75 species of mostly evergreen, usually epiphytic, sometimes terrestrial ferns, from tropical regions of the US, Central America, South America, but also from temperate and other tropical regions. Polypodium aureum L. (Phlebodium aureum Smith) has deeply cut leaves on thin stalks. There are unusual features - the rhisome creeps along the surface and it will grow in dry air.
