Reference point
A notion developed in recent work in cognitive grammar. Relates to the ability to utilise the idea of one entity in order to invoke or 'get at' another which is closely related. To illustrate, consider the following example: You know that girl who works part-time in the Dean's office? Well, her room-mate is having an affair with a much older married man from out of town. In this example the 'girl who works in the Dean's office' is being employed as a reference point in order to get at or 'make contact' with another entity, in this case her roommate. Key to developing the cognitive grammar account of reference point phenomena are the theoretical notions of target (2) and dominion.
