Steam heating pipe

For a long time, heating for passenger cars relied on steam, which was generated by the locomotive or a generator van for trains pulled by the first diesel locomotives and/or not equipped with an electric heating system. The steam passed from one car to another through an insulated pipe, which nevertheless was not 100% efficient with leaks particularly noticeable at the coupling between two pipes, thereby creating clouds of white steam that can easily be seen in photos of the era.
