An electrophoretic technique for transfer of a protein or nucleic acid from a slab gel, or similar unstable two-dimensional matrix, to a sheet of stable material such as nitrocellulose or poly(vinylidene difluoride), for further operations or analysis. The electric field is perpendicular to the plane of the gel and the sheet.
