Temporal sequence model

The term given to the timebased cognitive model for time in English by Vyvyan Evans. This model relates to the concepts earlier and later. Unlike the moving ego and moving time cognitive models, this cognitive model does not involve an ego (and thus the subjective experience of now).

Instead, a temporal event is understood relative to another earlier or later temporal event.

To illustrate the temporal sequence model consider the following linguistic examples:

  1. Monday precedes/comes before Tuesday
  2. Tuesday follows/comes after Monday In these sentences, later follows earlier: the earlier event, Monday, is understood as being located in front of the later event, Tuesday. In other words, it is relative to Tuesday, rather than an ego (the subjective experience of now), that Monday is earlier.
