A horizontal plane defined at a particular, arbitrary distance below a tide-gage bench mark and from which tidal heights at a tide gauge are, in theory, measured. In the period between successive levelings to a tide gauge bench mark, the plane is established at the tide-gage by reference to the contact mark.
